Different types of hearing protection used in noise filled environments

Why Hearing Protection is Important

Loud noise can be detrimental to hearing. The hair cells inside the inner ear, which are responsible for hearing, are extremely sensitive to changes and can be damaged when the noise gets too loud. Hearing loss as a result of loud noise exposure is irreversible and can happen at any age. In fact, more and more teens and young adults are experiencing hearing loss due to loud noise exposure from headphone usage.

Hearing loss can have a negative effect on well-being if not managed properly and within a timely manner. When left untreated, hearing loss makes it difficult to effectively hear and communicate. As a result, individuals may withdraw from social situations, isolating themselves. This can lead to depression, anxiety, a loss in speech comprehension, and even a decline in cognitive abilities.

To be proactive of your hearing health, it is important to keep the volume down and wear some form of ear protection, such as earplugs.

Hearing Protection

At Rainier Hearing, we offer custom hearing protection to keep your ears and your hearing safe. Custom hearing protection is the best way to be proactive about your hearing health. Hearing protection should be worn anytime you are in an environment where the noise is loud and could potentially damage your hearing. Whether you are hunting, at the shooting range, at a concert, or use power tools, you should wear hearing protection.

We also offer musicians ear plugs which are a great way to protect your hearing if you are a musician or attend music events regularly. For live music goers, it’s important to protect your hearing but you also want to hear the music being played. Musician ear plugs and in-ear monitors are a great option as they allow you to still hear the music while keeping your ears safe from loud sounds.

Hearing Protection

Why Hearing Protection Matters

Did you know recreational activities have some of the largest impact on our hearing? Whether you enjoy listening to live music with friends, working outside on your lawn with power tools, hunting, or going to the shooting range, all of these activities can have a harmful impact on your hearing ability.

Noise-induced hearing loss is incredibly common, affecting about 40 million U.S. adults aged 20-69. Many adults who have hearing loss as a result of loud noise exposure experienced it due to occupation. However, millions of Americans are also developing hearing loss due to inadequate or lack of hearing protection when spending time recreationally.

How Many Decibels Warrants Hearing Protection?

Sound is measured in units called decibels (dB). The higher the decibel level, the louder the noise. On the decibel scale, the level increase of 10 means that a sound is actually 10 times more intense or powerful.

Any sound over 85 decibels can be dangerous to your hearing when exposed on a regular basis. Impulse sounds that reach over 100 decibels can damage your hearing just one time during exposure. For those who enjoy hunting or going to a shooting range, a shotgun firing is 130 decibels! That’s 45 decibels over the threshold for sounds to be dangerous. Live music such as a rock concert can range from 110dB to 140dB which can easily get too loud, especially if you are close to the stage.

Whatever types of activities you enjoy doing in your free time, it’s crucial to wear the proper hearing protection.

Custom Hearing Protection

There is a wide range of hearing protection available for live music goers, hunters, and power tool enthusiasts. We can take a mold of your ears to create a custom fit earplug that will offer you optimal protection against loud sounds.

For music lovers, there are special earplugs that will protect your hearing while allowing you to hear the rhythm of the music. For hunters, we offer the best hearing protection for shooting, protecting your ears from the loud impulse sounds of a shotgun.

With professionally fitted hearing protection, your ears will be protected from loud sounds, while still being able to hear the soft sounds around you. While listening to music or outdoors, you need to hear the soft sounds around you, while still protecting your hearing from an impact blast of sound, such as power tools or suddenly loud music.

No matter what kind of activities you enjoy doing, we can help you protect your hearing.
